Famed marketing and management guru Simon Sinek discusses these topics in two short Ted Talks (links below). People buy WHY you do what you do, not WHAT you do. In this Ted Talk Sinek explains that you can inspire loyalty to your business (from both your employees and patients) by appealing to their limbic brain.  That is the part of the brain associated with feelings, emotions, behavior, long-term memory and your of smell.  My clients have heard me reference Simon Sinek’s philosophies when developing their marketing plans. We know that when potential patients are looking for a doctor they make their initial decisions based on emotions (does this doctor look trustworthy?), and then rationalize those decisions with facts (do they take my insurance?).

“Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank.” This is another Sinek talk that discusses a different aspect of leadership. A great leader is one who builds trust, cooperation and a sense of safety within their team. A good leader makes you feel safe in the organisation and therefore ready to deal with any challenges that may present themselves in the environment. When your employees feel that they are part of a circle of trust and safety, they are willing to sacrifice more for the greater good of the business. When that happens, the feeling will be passed on to your patients!
